Are you using fairly old graohics hardware that may not support 3d
stuff? If so then it might be this bug [1]. There is a workaround,
to add to the end of the file /etc/environment:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
And reboot, but don't know whether this would work over a re-boot with
the live image.
You can check if it is that bug by looking in .xsession-errors to see
if the error in the title is there.
