Need drastic surgery on Firefox Bookmarks

I've used Firefox and various bookmark-management software for a long
time.  I've been lax about maintaining those bookmarks.  Now I need to
get them under control, and I need help -- advice mostly.

The problem is basically that there are too many, largely but not
solely because of duplication of large groups of them.  When Firefox
backs them up, the result is an 8MB(!) JSON file.  As a result, the
editing process now is painfully slow.  I do not have any editor for
JSON other than the Firefox internals.  Vim is my usual editor, but it
seems unsuited to the task.

Any ideas?
