Kubuntu 12.04, but I will be using 12.10 shortly!

That's because Chrome and Chromium have some differences, one of
differences is Chrome is distributed by Google, not Canonical/Ubuntu.
If you want to install Chrome visit
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/, download the
appropriate deb package, and dpkg -i filename. It will
also install a repository in your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ directory so
your system will grab any updated versions.

I have a really old 600 Mhz laptop that I changed over to Lubuntu
from Xubuntu and it made a significant difference in how usable the
system runs. Have you tried Lubuntu?
