How to install Ubuntu 12.04, booted from external HDD

Or, I suppose, another way to look at it, is how to get the external
HDD to act like an install disc.
For this alternate, I believe I would need to use DD to write the iso
to the drive, right? Then I could use gparted to extend the partition?
