Stupid problem with text input fields on Chrome

Just on this one computer, the Chrome browser has a problem with certain
text input fields, e.g.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/

has a search field that says on start up "Enter Postcode, Street or
Place". It's supposed to blank the prompt message and show whatever
you're typing, but on this computer it doesn't blank the prompt, doesn't
show what you're typing, but does somehow buffer what you typed so that
the GO button works.

I have at least another web site that does not work properly.

This computer runs 64 bit 12.04. So does my Toshiba netbook, but on that
machine it appears to work properly. Firefox works properly on this
machine. Chrome works properly on this machine when running in an XP
virtual machine.

Anybody got a clue what's going wrong, please?
