LOL, yes, I tried to write it to *avoid* confusion.  Again, here's what 
happens:

Ok, well, that's more mystifying then my original post.  Now it works!  
The magic of reboot???

Weird, weird weird.

Previously, it would stall on saying "Escape character is.." and then
I would be unable to type anything.  Totally frozen.  

Now it works.  Gremlins?  Voodoo?
