Is it possible to mount an external HD via a command line?

if this is a usb external drive, when you plug it in there should be some
entries in dmesg that show the device it picked up. If you create a dir
under /media for it (i.e. /media/usb) and then mount the device named in
dmesg to that directory, it should now be able to be accessed.
