Here is another init string I found in my "little black book" and this 
from memory is the last one I used on the modems I had:

AT &F E0 T &C1 &D2 %E3 W1 S95=47 X3 S7=30 S2=128 S11=75 &W &W1

One of the things people often forgot when they buy a modem is that 
before sale it is factory tested and more often than not the factory 
TEST settings are left in the modem. But more importantly, when you 
bought a USED modem the settings set by the previous owner are most 
probably still active. Which is why the first thing one does is to use 
the &F setting to clear any settings stored in the NVRAM so that you 
start with a clean slate and set your own.

The other thing is that while there is supposed to be a universally 
accepted set of parameters for a modem some manufacturers come up with 
their own special settings so you really need to read the manual for the 
particular modem you have - the Robotics I know you said but which model?
