I have been using Thunderbird for some 10 years or so now and this has 
never happened.

There are 2 SENT folders - one for INBOX and  another for LOCAL. Which 
one do you have configured for Sent messages?

(I know what you wrote above but have you checked that the latest 
upgrade did not stuff things up for you?)
