xlock too slow to wake up

I can't replicate this. If I lock my screen, the password prompt
appears immediately upon pressing a key, touching the touchpad or
moving the trackball/mouse.
This is the same on my desktop and all of my laptops.
Roughly how long do you have to wait?
Does the screen come out of sleep immediately?
Is there any hard-drive activity when you do this?
What do you do to "shake the computer"?
