Found it and it wasn't the kernel. I had my headset plugged into a USB 
3.0 slot, as it was handy and on front of the mini-tower. Evidentially 
that was the problem. I moved the headset to a USB 2.0 slot and the 
mouse isn't jamming up. I read about that after a pile of google 
searching. It seemed so odd, that I tried it. No more problem with the 
mouse. Go figure. This stuff is going past me in both lanes. :) Ric
