Apologies for replying to my own thread but just in case anybody else
has this problem or is scouring Google late one night looking for an
answer, basically you have to ascertain which card you have like so:

`cat /proc/asound/card0/codec*`

then add it to `alsa-base.conf` thusly:

`sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf`

replacing vim with another text editor if you don't use Vim.

Then add at the tail of the file:

`options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL`

with `MODEL` being replaced by the model of your card. I got away with
using `basic` YMMV.

Then reboot & all should be OK.
