I also personally find Unity very good. I use fallback mode in Gnome 3
on Fedora 16 because their full Gnome 3 experience wasn't what I was
looking for on that distro but Unity on Ubuntu has enhanced my workflow
rather than stunted it & it's a very good dev environment I find.
