Thanks but As Basil wrote, the hard disk is healthy - as indicated by 
smart - so I think Basil is right and it's a corrupt file system. I'm 
investigating it now.
Will mention what I find when I proceed. I'm now running 11.10 from an 
USB-stick and plan to make a USB-stick with 12.04 and then install that 
the way you both suggested.
