I'm not installing the proprietary video drivers because I'm setting up a
system that I'll be cloning to some servers. They all have different
hardware configurations.

On the test system, I'm setting up the services I need and seeing how stable
12.04 is. Which has been completely stable as far as running services go.
(smartd, vnc4server, etc.) There are occasional compix crashes, but those
have never caused a problem.

Anyway, back to the subject:

I removed "quiet splash" and set GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768 to get rid of the
problems with the monitor on that system. (The LCD was displaying 'out of
range', etc. during boot)

However, even after the fix, that system would never display the Ubuntu boot
progress dots. But at least it ended up with a purple, blank display until
it was finished booting.

That system has an inexpensive Foxconn motherboard for AMD with onboard
video, which seems to have an issue.

I cloned the system to another machine that has a different mobo, and it
displays the progress dots perfectly.

But, I will try your suggestions when I get back to that machine...

Thanks
