How to add xfce?

Is there any difference between installing standard Ubuntu + xfce, and
installing Xubuntu, apart from some unused files lying on disk in the
former case?

In other words, are there any advantages to having a standard Ubuntu
install, apart from the unity vs xfce desktop issue?
