I'm not familiar with that function of PuTTY, what does it do?

For tabbed terminals, most emulators will do it including
gnome-terminal and KDE's Konsole. Hit ctrl+shift+tab to get a new tab.

For multiple shells in the same terminal emulator byobu or tmux will
suffice; byobu is basically GNU Screen with nice config. These require
a bit of learning since they're keyboard orientated, and they're also
not the same as each other.
