Now, yes.
Back in the pre-8.x timeframe, no.
I've been using Ubuntu since 4.10 "Warty Warthog", which is when I
switched over from SuSE. Before SuSE I used Caldera and Xandros, but
not full-time.
Back in þe Olden Dayes, mounting everything in sight at boot-time was
standard practice. Maybe too many noobs were trashing their Windows
systems by deleting stuff or something, I don't know, but it seems to
have gone away now.
