>I'm dreading the arrival of Win 8 and the machines it will engender.

Ubuntu went the way of a tablet interface two versions ago - before I ever
saw what Win8 looked like. I'm getting used to it, I guess.

And to the topic:

>As opposed to previous releases of Windows, Microsoft this time around is
imposing its' will on hardware vendors with a new Secure UEFI boot system.

This is nonsense. Meaningless propaganda.

The linux kernel already supports it, and my desktop's ASRock motherboard
has a UEFI bios. It's been in around for some time now.

The OS is not forced into using anything. It just needs to understand how to
use it to boot.

It's an advance in bios technology - an upgrade to the outdated bios code
that motherboards have used until recently.

And if the OS wants to use the 'signed cert' parts that MS is embracing,
then god bless em.

IT can use all the help it can get in keeping the networks we care for
running smoothly and infection-free.

AMD has announced it going to insert an ARM cpu core directly onto their cpu
dies. It will be dedicated to security. Things are getting interesting...

Anyway there's nothing to see here folks, so move along. Just another false
alarm.
