My ASUS MB with built-in audio crapped out. So, I just installed another 
sound card, and disabled the onboard one in the bios. And that worked 
like a charm. PCI Sound cards capable of 8 (7.1) outputs cost around 
$20-$30 bucks. It just might be that the internal hardware is just CHEAP 
and doesn't last long.

Of course, if it's a laptop, then battling it out with alsa is about 
your only alternative. Ric
