Oh man... now you've done it :-)
Yep. Just switched to GNOME Classic (2D no effects) and of course
without Compiz, the last doesn't work. The first setting:
$ gsettings set org.gnome.gnome-screenshot auto-save-directory
file:///home/<user>/<directory>
does. Back to the drawing board...
