Grub not installing when Xubuntu installs

In that case, assuming that Windows is on sda and Linux is going on
sdb, you need to make sure that on the disk partitioning screen it
says that it is going to install GRUB to /dev/sda, - note, not to
/dev/sdb and not to an individual partition, /dev/sda1 or /dev/sdb1.
Out of interest I have downloaded a copy of Xubuntu 12.04 and tried
putting it on a test machine just this evening and it defaulted to
installing GRUB onto /dev/sdb, the 2nd hard disk and the one with
/home on it. Strange!
The root filesystem was on sda5 and it should have put GRUB onto /dev/sda.
So it does seem to me to be perfectly feasible for it to have picked
the wrong drive for you - it did for me.
