If I wanted to recover info from anything, I would be using System
Rescue Disc - which also includes Gparted :-) .

But then, very few English speaking (of whatever flavour) people attempt
to be articulate - especially when they are asking for help :-) .

That's most interesting - recovering files you don't need.
I thought that your problem was that you could not access the directory
structure on that external HD.
How do you know that the files which are being recovered are ones which
you really want?
