GUI Dist Upgrade hangs on pkg configs which use whiptail

I used the GUI Distribution Upgrade method to upgrade from 11.10 to
12.04 (mythbuntu). When upgrading packages which use whiptail to display
a configuration window (mysql-server-5.5, libc6), the whiptail text
window displays in the Terminal area of the Dist Upgrade window, but I
don't find any way to enter anything into that window, so the upgrade
process pauses and simply waits for whiptail to complete, essentially
hanging.

When I kill the corresponding whiptail process(es), the upgrade resumes,
although related package configurations are incomplete. I plan on doing
"dpkg --configure -a" to clean things up once the upgrade finishes,
which I think will set things right.

Am I missing something, like some way to reply to the whiptail
configuration prompts when doing a GUI upgrade? Or is this a bug that
should be reported? I don't see anything in launchpad or forums
regarding this.
