Ubuntu 12.04 LTS removing unity and installing GNOME

To be even more detailed, the actual Unity UI is a plugin running on top  
of the Open GL based compositing manager Compiz while the default toolkit  
for applications, like the file manager Nautilus, is based on gtk3/GNOME.  
GNOME Shell and Unity has a lot in common like the file manager and other  
utilitarian applications like network manager, system monitor and text  
editor. Otherwise they are very similar.
