Canon iP4300 printer on 12.04, messing up first page and going slow

I have a Canon ip4300 printer which, with Ubuntu 11.10 and before,
rattled through a page of text in 5 seconds a bit more, if I remember
correctly.  Having upgraded to 12.04 it often messes up the first
page, printing the first few lines then throwing a page or two with
just a messed up top line.  In addition it runs much slower, taking
maybe 20 or 30 seconds for a page.  I am using the standard driver
that Ubuntu supplies automatically and have tried removing and
re-installing the printer.  On the printer settings it says Canon
PIXMA iP4300 - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.8-pre1.

Any suggestions anyone?
