No 1680x1050 for external monitor

I would try to install another distribution, for example Ubuntu 12.04
or an older Kubuntu on the same computer. If that works, I would take
a look at the xorg.conf file and use it, or parts of it, in the
Kubuntu 12.04 installation.

But there might be better suggestions out there; I am really very far
from expert level…
