I use Thunderbird with no problems, it's been a stalwart, not perfect 
but ok for my stuff. I wondered if Unity was an issue but as you use KDE 
with similar results, I'm guessing it's not Unity.

Strange thing just now, I googled Proposed,  following instructions I 
went to Software Centre, tried to enter 'Software', it stalled on 'Soft' 
for 30 seconds, then htop showed that compiz stalled, failed with error 
message and everything shut down for 30 seconds then it all came back.
Thinking about it,  compiz has failed half a dozen times over the past 
weeks, I didn't think much about it till now.
Maybe kernel update will fix it.
