Read the drive's SMART info. It states number of hours in use, the
temperature, and if there are any reallocated sectors. On some drives it
shows if the drive has seen a hard shock such as when it's been dropped.

 

As far as moving the system, you can use clonezilla to copy the whole thing
to the larger drive, and then boot a cd and use gparted to grow the '  / '
partition. (root partition) Or whatever partition if you created a different
layout than the default.
