Actually I've been using Ubuntu for more than 6 years and I update every
time a new package is available and I can count on the fingers of one
hand the times that this has introduced a regression.

Looks like this was the leap second thing because a second reboot (after
12am) fixed the problem.

Strange, as there have been leap seconds added to Linux systems many
times over the years and I've never seen this happen before.
