I haven't been following this conversation until a few minutes ago and 
then went back and put back all the deleted messages in this thread.

What I suspect is happening is that you have a corrupted file system 
which needs to be repaired. Whenever you boot your system your file 
system is automatically checked for errors and the errors corrected but 
believe me, as I know from first hand experience, that this does not 
always work and one has to manually run 'e2fsck' to correct the 
corruption. If you don't know how to do this then simply ask. (BTW, I am 
assuming that your filesystem is in ext3 or ext4 format?)

The other possibility in your case is that your HD is starting to go 
belly-up. Do you have S.M.A.R.T. installed and running? (How old is the 
HDD anyway?)
