By which you mean the one USB cable, right?

But be very careful with this. The external may draw a bit too much 
power thru the USB and strain the mobo's psu or even not spin up if the 
psu cannot provide the power it needs. Which is why many externals come 
with their own power supplies to avoid problems to the mobo psu.
