I do not think rebooting would make it suddenly cooler, would it?

Maybe. Judging from the fan speed overheating was not a problem.

Do you mean xserver-xorg-video-intel, or the kernel bits, or the Mesa
bits? Is there a PPA with newer driver versions for oneiric?
I wish there was a way to reproduce this faster than by using the laptop
for a week after each boot.
