Leila,

The best way is to use sudo to become root:

jay at polar:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for jay: <password>
root at polar:/home/jay#


No other prompts for password  will be requested.
CAUTION: YOU ARE ROOT be sure to exit or logout when done
