unresponsive keyboard

I posted this on the Debian-users list but didn't any meaningful
replies. Ubuntu being close enough to Debian, maybe someone here has
some insight into my problem.

##################################################################

Running squeeze 6.04 with Gnome and all updates as of a week ago. At
that
time my keyboard became unresponsive. It's not a hardware problem as it
works when I boot into Ubuntu on the same HD. The strangest thing is
that
sometimes I can boot into squeeze and type my login password
successfully and sometimes the keyboard is dead so I can't log in. When
I can boot in, the GUI works but I can't become root to try and trouble
shoot.

All this only happens with squeeze which has been running flawlessly
ever
since 6.01 when I first installed it.

Short of reinstalling, I have no idea how to attack this. Running
searches turned up nothing applicable, unless I missed it, Any pointers
appreciated.

The above is what I posted to Debian-users last week. Since then
I finally broke down and reinstalled, formatting everything except
/home. The problem remains, indicating to me that the problem is in
/home, but where?

As I said above, any pointers appreciated.
