USB NICs

Due to issues with unsupported NICs in Ubuntu [1] I would like to add
a USB NIC to my emergency toolkit. However, I don't see any way of
determining which of them will work with modern *buntus:

Some mention in their supported OS "Not for 64 bit / Not for Mac" and
other say that they support "Linux v2" which I understand to be the
2.4.x kernels but not necessarily the 2.6.x or 3.x kernels as I did
try one bought locally that did not work in 12.04 LTS. Is there any
way to determine before purchase which of these adapters will work in
the current Ubuntu?
Thanks.
