how to set kate as default editor in 10.04?

Making progress... :-)
Just got an email from a friend - he suggested changing the link in
etc/alternatives/gnome-text-editor. Did that and it seems to mostly
work. It opens kate instead of gedit, but it opens in a kate on
another desktop, not in the desktop I'm currently on [which is running
kate too]. Any ideas how I can get it to open in one of the kates on
the same desktop?
