W95 did it using device drivers specific to the video chips.

Xorg (& thus *buntu) has graduated to automagic configuration with generic 
drivers, except the magic isn't always so magical. Nevertheless, in most 
cases where the magic fails, reverting to use of /etc/X11/xorg.con* can get 
you where you want to be, more often than not without proprietary driver 
installation required. Most of the nots are people with NVidia, since that 
company is demonstrably anti-FOSS, unlike AMD & Intel.
