supermicro machines

I am running ubuntu 12.04 on a number of supermicro machines and every now
and then they freeze during boot. If I hard reset them, the second boot
always seems to work. I noticed that the second time always seems to
change the console resolution to something lower than the original. Is
there a way to force this state so it always boots, or how would I
troubleshoot why the first boot freezes?
