An hour after I posted that, I did find the problem. In
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf, network browsing was disabled, again. I have
specifically enabled that several time, the most recent was I believe in
June or July of this summer. I turned it back on, did the search for
printers again, then remembered I had not restarted cups, and did so. Both
machines then found the shared printers and I was able to print a .hal
config file from both machines.
Then I went back and did the chattr +i on both of those
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf files. If the next cups update has a litter of
elephants over that, so be it.
I have a long history, going clear back to his starving student days, with
Michael Sweet, but I won't re-wash that laundry here.
I just found an unsubscribe confirm, so I subbed to my newer address. I
had forgotten that was a gmail account and I was getting rid of those last
spring.
Cheers, Gene
