Hi All,
on Ubuntu 12.10, I clicked on Ubuntu Software Center
in the apps menu bar on the left, and all of a sudden
I could get almost no response from the system.

Typically high xorg cpu usage can be caused by client or client-side
services:
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/HighCPU>
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/294972>
[MASTER: xorg high cpu usage, general system sluggishness]
In this case, update-software and software-center are running.
software-center/update-software goes out and calls apt-xapian-index.
This has been known to cause high cpu usage by xorg in the past:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/355355>
[Update Manager causes high Xorg CPU usage when checking for updates]
$ apt-cache rdepends apt-xapian-index
apt-xapian-index
Reverse Depends:
software-center
aptitude
synaptic
packagekit-backend-aptcc
packagekit-backend-apt
goplay
fuss-launcher
ept-cache
adept
software-center
python-apt
muon-installer
muon
aptitude
So my _guess_ is that apt-xapian-index(db) is likely to be the
underlying issue.
