mailman: illegal list name

doesn't provide any troubleshooting which I see.  However, I'm not the 
only one to get this message:

However, I see no solution available.  How can I get mailman to stop 
"seeing", or generating:

Illegal list name: mailman at dur

and instead use mailman at dur.bounceme.net

where is it getting just plain "dur" from, and not the FQDN?
