Strange flashplayer failure

Greetings;

10-04.4 LTS with enough kde to run kmail.

The java tree in /etc/alternatives seems to well mucked up.
Firefox, nor any other browser utility I have, cannot find the flashplayer
even though firefox can see the last linux version with no problems in the
about:plugins screen.

So I am not able to play 99% of the videos on the cbsnews.com site, nor
am I able to see the tutorials for freecad, which are html based and need
flashplayer.

An ls -l of /etc/alternatives discloses that there is one java link in
that directory that is broken because the link target,
pluginappletviewer -> /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/pluginappletviewer

does not exist.

I did a locate pluginapppletviewer, finding another link pointing at
/etc/alternatives/pluginappletviwer

This also fell out of the locate cmd:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 95 2012-06-28 01:20 /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/pluginappletviewer

It has some length like a script, so:
root at coyote:/etc/alternatives# cat /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/pluginappletviewer
--------------------
auto
/usr/bin/pluginappletviewer

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/pluginappletviewer
1061
---------------------
So the whole thing is eating a non-existent tail.

I have no clue if this is my flashplayer problem, but how can this be fixed?
Synaptic doesn't seem to offer any java-6 stuffs at all! I have installed
a bunch of the icedtea stuff that looked like the usual suspects, but
nothing seems to apply to this, the executable is simply missing.

Thanks.

Cheers, Gene
