Thanks, Steve. I went to the link and my heart leapt - it looked like
exactly what I needed!

But when I booted off my 12.04 USB stick again and checked, it turned
out 12.04 was already using the right kernel, and iwlwifi was already
installed, so sadly that's not it :-(

However, more info: Running "rfkill list all" shows this:

   0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
        Soft-blocked: yes
        Hard-blocked: yes
   0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft-blocked: no
        Hard-blocked: no

I've found some suggestions about using rfkill to unblock and about
removing the dell-wifi module. I'll try those. Any *other* ideas
welcome.

BTW, remember that this laptop works *perfectly* with 10.10, and *no*
physical changes of any kind are being made - just booting off a USB
stick. The wireless switch, for example, is NOT off.

Regards, K.
