GNOME2 might be dead, but it has forks which are alive.
I moved to MATE yesterday and it's just like how GNOME 2. The only
differences which I see are only MATE logo instead of that feet of GNOME
and some programs have different names, for example Nautilus is Caja and
System menu has button "About MATE" instead of "About GNOME". You might
want to try it.
