This is all fixable with MATE, which I have been using for several
months and is *great*. I'm too lit right now to dig it all up (bedtime
here) but I promise to post tomorrow the links you will need to d/l and
get going a marvelous feature-rich, error-free, classic Gnome-2 clone.
