>/ As NoOp, I believe, pointed out, one can only create the xorg.conf file
/>/ once you have the driver from nVidia site installed and not the
/>/ fiddled-with driver from the ubuntu repo because no xorg.conf is auto
/>/ created now.

Some time back he posted his xorg.conf file. It noted VESA as the
driver. Ergo, he has one. Somewhere.
You know what? If the OP would type sudo lshw and uparrow to read the
display section, then we'd KNOW what the system thinks he has.
Mine reads:
*-display
description: VGA compatible controller
product: G96 [GeForce 9400 GT]
vendor: nVidia Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info:pci at 0000 <https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users>:01:00.0
version: a1
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
Prolly should have suggested this before... then we'd KNOW what the bios
is letting the OS play with. So, if the OP would do this, and report his
result, that will narrow down the problem.
<slaps forehead> I should have had a V-8.<chuckles> Ric
This is what I get, my Nvidia 6600gt is listed at the bottom
