Maybe you're right, but we are trying to eliminate possibilities here.
Oh, there's a nice command by popey that you may want to include in the 
list of recovery root commands

apt-get install ubuntu-desktop^    (note the caret end of line)

I have not any major need for this yet (for me kubuntu) but understand 
it's very handy.
