installing NS 2 on ubuntu

Hi,
i'm new in using ubuntu; i'm trying to install Network Simulator NS 2 but
each time I get the following error when trying to execute the following
command:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
E: couldn't find packet build-essential

please help me to solve this problem
