Maybe not so interesting. I'm confusing issues. The OP's problem was
with the nvidia driver - which also had caused me problems. Reverting to
the 173 driver helped with my display problems but then the mouse began
acting up.
Then I found the Xorg log with line about "requesting unpleasantly
large amount of memory" and the bug report mentioning nvidia drivers. In
a search about the proprietary drivers I found the link at the Ubuntu
forums.
In any case the problem is not happening yet and all I did was install
kernel headers.
Go figure.
